Murs, Me and New Music

I've been in a music rut for the last...oh I don't know... 35 years.  I was really lucky to have very musically inclined parents who introduced me to Pink Floyd, Elton John, The Beatles at a very early age.  No music was off limits for me as a kid, heck my first record was Madonna's Like A Virgin when I didn't even know the meaning of the word virgin.

I've noticed that my music taste really hasn't grown with me as the years go by.  I stick to the same standards and my MP3 player has a wide selection of my old favorites like No Doubt and various movie soundtracks.  Nothing new, nothing adventurous.  The realization came to me the other day that I wouldn't necessarily eat the same food all the time (popcorn aside) so why on earth am I not experimenting with my music tastes as well?

Slowly but surely I've been adding new music to my repetoire discovering bands like Kings of Leon, Mumford and Sons, AWOL Nation, Ben Harper and Death Cab for Cutie.  Admittedly these bands are ones that my Fiancee greatly enjoys so through him I am being exposed to a whole different genre of music.

One artist that I've been checking out lately is hip hop artist Murs.  I have a deep appreciation for hip hop music (although my taste has been stuck in the 1990's regarding this genre) and with my introduction to Murs I can finally bring my hip hop collection into the millenium.  What I like about his music is that it's a positive art form, choosing to tackle issues such as homophobia and not glamourizing gun culture like his hip hop counterparts.

I'd also like to share that Murs follows a plant based diet, which in a culture that is heavy on the appearance of manly kind of men, is super cool that he breaks outside that norm.  Check out Murs latest video here:

Murs is coming to Vancouver on Thursday March 14th and will be performing at Fortune Sound Club.  If you'd like to buy tickets check out this page here.  I recently attend Liberation BC's Animal Advocacy Camp and was thrilled to see information about Murs' show on one of the tables, it's really important to help promote those who bring a positive message into our world as there seems to be far too many people out there trying to bring us down.

So here begins my journey on the road to discovering new music.  Hopefully I'll be able to share with you my discoveries, like Murs and you can follow (or listen) along.  If there is any music out there that is indepent, fun and quirky that you love make sure to drop me a line and let me know!
